How can we tell the difference between different features on a map? (Water and land)
II. Materials for Learning Activities
· Teacher will need: Map of continents/oceans, website link to map (http://exploringancientchina.weebly.com), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zya2bqrLVfI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la40PHXDP38, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf--PQNDn7g (Continent and Ocean songs-optional which to use), continents and oceans game cards
· Students will need: Social studies journal, pencil/crayons/markers, glue, worksheets
III. Procedures for Learning Activities
· Introduction (5-7 minutes)
1. Teacher will gather students on rug for whole group instruction. Teacher will remind students
"remember yesterday we discussed that maps are tools that geographers use to study the Earth in an organized and helpful way." Question: Who can remember some features of a map? Students will be given 30 seconds to turn and talk with their elbow partner to answer question. Teacher will call on a few students to give their responses and take note of students remembering previous lesson/using map terminology.
2. Teacher will use SMART board to show pictures of a house, a neighborhood, state, and country. Students will be asked about what Americans have in common with other people in the world - connection to future lesson (Response to look for: we all live on earth or similar). Teacher will also discuss what are the two things that make up the earth (Response: water and land)
Instructional strategies (15-20 minutes)
1. Focus lesson will be given and map of the world will be displayed on the SMART board for students. Teacher will introduce words: Continents and Oceans. Teacher will write on white board (a very large body of land AND a large body of water to define words). Students will be asked if they can guess how many continents there are (What is the name of the continent we live on?). Students will be asked how many oceans do you think there are on the Earth by looking at the map?
2. Teacher will point to map of the world and name all seven continents. Students will be asked to repeat the name of each continent. Teacher will point to map of the world and name all five oceans. Students will be asked to repeat the name of each ocean. Students will be taught SONG: Continents and Oceans (Lyrics below)
Song : Continents and Oceans
Tune: London Bridge
There are seven continents,
Continents, continents
There are seven continents,
On the earth.
North and South American,
Africa, Asia
Europe and Antarctica
Don’t forget Australia!
There are also five oceans,
Five oceans, five oceans
There are also five oceans
On the earth.
Indian, Atlantic,
Arctic, Pacific.
Then there is the Southern
Ocean. That makes five!
Students will sing the song several times as teacher (or one student) points to each continent or ocean.
3. Students will play "Continents and Oceans" game. Game cards include names of either "continent" (North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, Europe) or "ocean" (Indian, Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern). Each student will have opportunity to come choose a card and then will locate either feature on blank map, as well as, tell class whether the name is a continent or ocean, The map will be displayed on SMART board. Students will take turns picking cards. Teacher will observe and make notes for student understanding.
4. After game students will be given directions about activity worksheet. Students will be given blank map of the world and labels with names of each continent and ocean. Students will also label compass rose, make a legend, and title their maps. They will need to glue the worksheet in their social studies journal. Students will label map and be asked to color oceans and continents specific colors.
5. Teacher will circulate room and ask for questions or concerns during activity. Teacher can follow with engaging questions: Which continent is the farthest from our school? Which is the closest? Which continent would you like to visit? Why?
Summary (3-5 minutes)
1. Teacher will ask students to come to rug for closure when students finish labeling map. Teacher will ask students to think about differences and similarities between land and water on Earth. Students will turn and talk to discuss their observations. Teacher will take anecdotal notes and check for student comprehension. Students will sing continent and ocean song at the end of the lesson.
IV. Assessment
Formative:
Teacher will take notes of any misconceptions during activity. Teacher will check for understanding through observation and anecdotal notes. Teacher will ask for questions or comments related to worksheets.
Teacher will have student's social studies journal to check for their exploration and reflections for understanding of concept to assess for objectives. Teacher will have worksheet that is labeled and color coded by students.
V. Differentiation and Accommodations
Differentiation
· This lesson plan appeals to visual learners who are able to view the maps on the SMART board as well as examples of maps (hand-outs) - Auditory learners (teacher explanations) kinesthetic learners (activity worksheet) - Musical learners (Lyrics to remember continents and oceans)
Accommodations
· Students who need extra help with the activity can work with partners rather than individually. Teacher can read directions to students step-by-step (ample opportunity for scaffolding). Teacher may rotate and work directly with group of students who are in need of additional assistance or guidance. Teacher may also include differentiated map materials by using technology or print resources.
VI. Technology
SMART board will be used to project map and play continents and oceans song.
